curl offers upload and sending capabilities. curl is released under a free software permissive license (a MIT derivate). Wget can download Web pages and files it can submit form data and follow links it can mirror. wget is released under a free software copyleft license (the GNU GPL). Wget is a command-line Web browser for Unix and Windows. ( curl has a different set of options see its manpage. curl builds and runs on more platforms than wget. Wget has over 70 options, so we’ll cover just a few important ones. wget has the added ability to resume a download if it gets interrupted in the middle, say, due to a network failure: just run wget -c with the same URL and it picks up where it left off.Īnother similar command is curl, which writes to standard output by default-unlike wget, which duplicates the original page filenames by default. Which is saved to a file index.html in the current directory. For example, let’s capture the Yahoo home page: $ wget If you use a hyphen - as the offset, curl will look at the already downloaded portion of the file and determine the correct offset to use for itself. This causes curl to restart the download at a specified point or offset within the target file. Otherwise, it will print wget command not found. If you have wget installed, the system will print wget: missing URL. To check whether the Wget package is installed on your system, open up your console, type wget, and press enter. It’s great for capturing individual pages or entire web page hierarchies to arbitrary depth. To restart the download, use the -C (continue at) option. The wget package is pre-installed on most Linux distributions today. The wget command hits a URL and downloads the information to a file or standard output.
